The Feather Awards Are Criticized For Wrong Nominees

The 14th annual Feather Awards might be off to a bad start, since Twitter users aren’t exactly jumping for joy over the nominees in the drama category. Even though there is a lot of disagreement on social media about the nominees. But people on Twitter think that this award ceremony is losing its point because it honors “abusers and transphobes.”

After the list of feather award nominees was made public, people who were upset took to Twitter to say what they didn’t like. The people who were put forward to win in the drama category really upset a lot of people.

“These are personalities we read about every Sunday over breakfast, their lives revolve around a lot of dramatic behaviour or situation. And the 2022 “Drama Queen of the Year” nominees are: #Feathers14 #UnFvckenApologetic” wrote Feather Awards

People on Twitter have called this award show, among other things, “disgusting” because of some of the nominees, especially those in the drama category.

Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Town, is known for stirring up trouble on Twitter. In the past, she has said things about the transgender community. People on Twitter are very upset that a Queer awards show is honoring someone they call a “transphobe.”

“Drama should be fun & light. Platforming a known transphobe in an award show that is supposed to be a safe space for the Queer community is really harmful. So what if Prof Phakeng decides to honor the invite? are trans people expected to be comfortable with her in there?” wrote Nampree

The entire Feather Awards ceremony has been criticized by Tweeps for being shameless and mocking their Queer community. While some Twitter users have added that actor Sthembiso “SK” Khoza is a “known abuser,” the other side of the coin is that he is being honored at an awards ceremony that ought to be a safe place for the underprivileged.

“The feather awards has always done this platforming harmful people and I just don’t understand the thinking behind it” wrote Nontsikelelo

“They don’t care about any Queers they in for the bag” wrote Omolola

“They don’t care and cause asoze sithethe into enye every year about the people they nominate abanandaba” wrote Xesibe

“SK is also an abuser” wrote Nampree

On November 10, 2022, the 14th annual feather awards will be held at The Market Theatre.
