In February, an unknown gunman shot and killed AKA in Durban. No arrests have been made as of yet.

The late rapper won four Metro FM Awards in the following categories, leaving Megacy in tears of joy and sadness:

  • Artist of the Year
  • Best Collaboration Song (Lemons to Lemonade ft Nasty C)
  • Best Hip Hop Artist
  • Best Male Artist

AKA’s posthumous album Mass Country was released just two weeks after his gruesome murder. According to many friends and fans, the hitmaker “knew” it would be his last musical offering.

Speaking to SowetanLIVE, AKA’s proud parents reflected on his win.

Dad Tony -who is also an avid music lover – said: “We came here hoping that he will win one or two because Supa Mega is just Supa Mega. But we got more.

“I know he is watching where he is, and he is happy like us. In fact, he is proud of the work he put in. The awards that really make me proud include the Best Hip-Hop Artist and Artist of The Year.”

AKA’s mother, Lynn Forbes – who has shared her dream of climbing Mount Everest in remembrance of her son – added: “Kiernan honey, you have come full circle today. You won your first Metro FM Music Award in this province. Even then, he was among the most winners of the night. Even today, the same happens.”

AKA’s parents and their granddaughter visited West Park Cemetery in Johannesburg after the awards ceremony.

Mandoza and Robbie Malinga are buried with the rapper in Heroes Acre.

See this bittersweet moment…
