The Forbes family released a heartbreaking statement today detailing AKA’s funeral and memorial arrangements.
The funeral and memorial arrangements for South African rapper Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, better known by his stage name AKA, have been announced. The news was announced earlier today by the Forbes family on the 35-year-Twitter old’s page. The Lemonade singer was shot outside Wish restaurant in Durban, Kwa Zulu-Natal, where he had been dining with friends on Friday evening.
AKA’S FUNERAL DETAILS HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED
Local rapper AKA, who died on February 10th, will be laid to rest in a private ceremony on Saturday, February 18th. His family took to Twitter earlier today to share details about the funeral and memorial service, which, unlike the funeral, will be open to the public.
“We as the Forbes family would like to acknowledge the outpouring of love we have received over the past few days. Kiernan wasn’t just loved by us as a family but by the nation, as we’ve seen from loved ones, friends, industry colleagues, media tributes, and the Megacy,” read the statement.
“It is our wish to celebrate the life of giving with those he touched and impacted through his gift of music. The memorial will therefore be open to the public as well as streamed online. Kiernan will be laid to rest in a private provincial funeral on Saturday 18 February 2023,” reads the statement.
It goes on to reveal that the date of the memorial service is Friday 17 February 2023 at 3 pm at the Sandton Convention Centre. Limited free tickets to the memorial are available on WebTickets. The statement also thanked DJ Zinhle’s “husband” Murdah Bongz’s (Bongani Mohosana) for the support but noted that he will not be present at the funeral. This is due to observing cultural protocol.
DJ Zinhle is the ex-girlfriend and mother of AKA’s seven-year-old daughter Kairo Forbes.

The memorial will also be live-streamed on the AKAWORLDWIDE YouTube page. Tony Forbes, AKA’s father was also announced as the family’s official family spokesperson and is set to give a public statement at 3pm today.
